The Five Cs Framework
Melina Palmer:
Let’s start with your book and the Five Cs. Can you give us an overview?
Abby Davisson:
Absolutely. The Five Cs are a framework for making big life decisions. They stand for:
- Clarify what matters most to you
- Communicate with those affected
- Consider a range of options
- Check in with trusted resources
- Explore potential Consequences
These steps help people slow down and think more intentionally when navigating money, relationships, careers, and beyond.
Clarify What Matters Most
Melina Palmer:
That first C—Clarify—why is it so important?
Abby Davisson:
Clarifying your values and priorities is essential. Without knowing what matters most, it’s easy to get pulled by what others want or what feels urgent. Clarifying grounds your decisions in your own truth.
Communicate With Stakeholders
Melina Palmer:
Let’s talk about Communication. How do you suggest people approach tough conversations?
Abby Davisson:
Being open and curious is key. Ask questions, express your values, and invite the other person to share theirs. This can reduce conflict and create shared understanding—even if you don’t agree on everything.
Consider a Range of Options
Melina Palmer:
People often feel stuck between two options. What does it mean to Consider?
Abby Davisson:
We call it “reframing the binary.” If you’re stuck between two choices, zoom out. There may be a third or fourth path you haven’t explored. Expanding the set of possibilities helps you find more creative, fulfilling solutions.
Check In With Trusted Resources
Melina Palmer:
How do you recommend people Check in?
Abby Davisson:
Talk with people who know you well and have your best interest at heart. This could be friends, mentors, therapists—anyone who can offer perspective and reflect back what they see. Sometimes we’re too close to the decision to see clearly.
Explore Consequences
Melina Palmer:
And the final C—Consequences. How should people think about this step?
Abby Davisson:
Think about the long-term. How will you feel about this decision in a week, a year, ten years? And what will it mean for the people around you? This helps ensure your choice is sustainable and aligned with your values.
